We at Interglobal Adventure understand the concept of searching for great flight rates. Sometimes, we find a great price on a plane ticket to a fantastic destination, prior to knowing if we can actually take the trip. If you find yourself in front of a screen flashing a great rate but are uncertain if you can take the adventure, know that all tickets originating from the United States allow for a 24-hour refund policy, free of charge.

Sometimes a great airfare rate shows up in front of you and FOMO takes over. Within 30 seconds your mind is flashing scenes of sunsets on beaches, snow on the mountains or great meals in historical squares. You fear that if you don't get the ticket, the price will go up and you will miss out on a great opportunity. Several airlines offer options for holding tickets for a period of time, usually up to 24-hours. However, they charge for this service. Don't be fooled by this tactic. In 2011, the US Department of Transportation passed regulation stating that customers have 24 hours from the time of purchase to cancel an airline ticket and receive a full reimbursement.

The 24-hour rule applies to all airline tickets sold for flights that originate in the United States, including those on foreign flagged carriers. It should be noted that this rule only applies to tickets purchased directly with the airline and not with consolidators such as Priceline and Expedia. Should you wish to cancel a ticket with a consolidator, you are bound to their terms and conditions of the consolidator, not necessarily to those of the airline.

With the option to cancel airline tickets without penalty for up to 24-hours past the time of purchase, FOMO no longer has to control your vacation plans. This allows you to make further determinations if you can actually take the trip or not. Check out lodging options, weather patterns and opening hours for attractions, then make a decision if the timeframe is feasible. If the trip cannot be done, make sure to cancel the ticket in sufficient time. The last thing you want to do is pay for a ticket you can't use or is impractical for your circumstance. Otherwise, this could be a great opportunity for the flight to pick you, rather than the other way around. Just make sure you book directly with the airline to take advantage of this opportunity.
